Fear Is Not from God
Fear is not from God.
That is a hard sentence to believe on the days when fear is the loudest thing in the room. When your chest is tight, your thoughts are racing, and you cannot seem to talk yourself down, fear feels less like a visitor and more like the truth about who you are. But His Word tells us that He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV).
In this passage, the Apostle Paul was writing to Timothy from prison. Paul had suffered for his faith, and before he was converted he had also caused suffering for the faith of others. He knew fear from both sides of it. Writing from a cell, he could see that Timothy had a heart for God and for serving others, and he wanted to exhort him to be bold in the work God was leading him to. This is not a promise handed down from someone with an easy life. It is one man in chains telling another, from experience, that fear does not get the final word.
Notice what that verse does. It does not scold you for being afraid. It tells you where fear did not come from — and then it names three things that did.
Power. Not the kind you manufacture by trying harder, but the kind that is already at work in you.
Love. The steady, unearned kind that does not flinch at your worst day.
And a sound mind. This is the one we often skip past, and it may be the one we need most. A sound mind is calm, steady, and self-controlled — the opposite of the panic and confusion fear can bring. It is the ability to think clearly again. To take one thing at a time. To stop spiraling long enough to hear something true.
That is not a personality trait some people are lucky enough to have. Scripture calls it a gift.
So if you need peace today, you do not have to work your way into it. Ask God to help you recognize His power and love already at work in your life. Ask Him to help you receive His gift of a calm heart and a steady mind. You are not talking yourself into courage — you are receiving something that was already given.
Fear may still knock. But it does not get to tell you who you are.
